The UAlbany LGBTQ+ News Activity Tracker (powered by Nowigence) was developed to track events (such as protests, violence, and efforts at legislation and protection) related to the LGBTQ+ community in various newspaper articles and media outlets worldwide. The tracker gathers data globally and over time to map a pattern of positive and negative activity trends concerning the LGBTQ+ population. It was developed via a partnership between the University at Albany and Nowigence Market Intelligence.
The tracker is designed to specifically monitor daily activity by governmental and non-governmental actors by pulling data from news articles, blogs and websites. This makes our site unique in the field as we map news sources, not social media. While the tracker maps positive and negative trends concerning pro or anti-LGBTQ+ activities in each country, the tracker does not take into account existing laws and policies of government entities or their overall treatment of the LGBTQ+ population in its mapping of positive or negative events. Future iterations of the UAlbany tracker will include a baseline for states and countries that takes into account their existing laws. However, at the present time, the UAlbany Activity Tracker focuses solely on daily activity related to the LGBTQ+ community.
